Best for

Commodity, energy, gold and diamond traders; crypto, gaming and AI startups wanting a dedicated ecosystem; and international SMEs that prioritise banking credibility and a recognised Dubai business address over lowest cost.

Not ideal for

Budget-first solo founders and freelancers (IFZA, SHAMS or RAKEZ are far cheaper), and manufacturers or logistics operators needing large warehouses/plots at scale (JAFZA or KEZAD fit better).

10Strengths & limitations
Strengths
  • Globally recognised brand — fDi Global Free Zone of the Year 9 years running (2015-2023) — smooths bank KYC and counterparty diligence
  • Best banking access of any mainstream UAE free zone: 7 partner banks incl. Mashreq, Emirates NBD, CBD (kiosk in Almas Tower) and Wio; 2-4 week account opening
  • 1,000+ activities across 20 sectors plus dedicated Crypto, Gaming and AI Centres with funding/mentoring networks
  • Fully digital remote setup; multi-year licences with 5-20% renewal discounts; dual-licence permit (AED 5,000/yr) opens mainland Dubai trading
  • QFZP 0% corporate tax on qualifying income; credible JLT commercial address with metro access
Caveats
  • Premium pricing: licence AED 20,285/yr + AED 9,020 registration + mandatory workspace from AED 16,000-19,000/yr; year-1 packages start at AED 35,484
  • AED 50,000 minimum share capital must be deposited after licence issuance (withdrawable, but a cash-flow hurdle)
  • Flexi-desk visa quota capped at 3; larger teams must lease costlier space (~1 visa per 9 sqm)
  • Not an FTA VAT designated zone — standard 5% VAT applies to all supplies, unlike JAFZA/DAFZA for goods

Not ideal for: Budget-first solo founders and freelancers (IFZA, SHAMS or RAKEZ are far cheaper), and manufacturers or logistics operators needing large warehouses/plots at scale (JAFZA or KEZAD fit better).

12Tax considerations
Questions to raise with your tax advisor
  1. Does your planned revenue qualify under the QFZP qualifying-income rules?

QFZP 0% only applies to qualifying income. Mainland trading or revenue from non-free-zone clients is generally non-qualifying and taxed at 9%.

  2. How much of your revenue will come from mainland UAE customers, and how does that affect QFZP and 5% VAT obligations?

Mainland revenue beyond ad-hoc levels can disqualify QFZP and triggers full 9% corporate tax plus standard VAT on supplies.

  3. Do any of your customers, suppliers, or shareholders meet the FTA's related-party definition?

Related-party transactions need transfer-pricing documentation and may push otherwise-qualifying income into the 9% bracket.

These prompts are due-diligence questions, not tax advice. Confirm every answer with a UAE-licensed tax advisor before incorporating.
