Step-by-step renewal process
Start 60 days before expiry
UAE residency visas can be renewed up to 60 days before the expiry date. Starting early avoids fines and gives time to resolve any issues. You can check your visa expiry date on the ICA UAE app or the GDRFA Dubai app.
Renew your free zone trade licence first
Your investor/partner visa is tied to your free zone licence. If your licence has lapsed or is about to expire, renew it first — the zone authority will not process a visa renewal on an expired licence.
Book and complete medical fitness test
A medical fitness certificate (blood test + chest X-ray) is required for every visa renewal. Book at any MOHAP-approved medical centre. Results are available in 1–3 working days. Cost: AED 300–450 per person.
Submit renewal application via your free zone
Most free zones process visa renewals through their own portals. Submit: valid passport (6+ months remaining), medical fitness certificate, current Emirates ID, passport-size photo, and NOC from the zone if required. Processing: 3–10 working days.
Receive new entry permit and complete status change
If you are inside the UAE, a status change (change of status) is processed within the UAE — no exit required. If you are outside the UAE, a new entry permit is issued and you enter on that.
Renew Emirates ID
Once your residency visa is renewed, go to an ICA or GDRFA service centre (or use the ICA UAE app) to renew your Emirates ID. Submit biometrics if required. Cost: AED 100–370 depending on validity. New ID is posted to your registered address in 5–10 working days.

Common questions
What happens if my residency visa expires?
You will be considered overstaying — fines of AED 25/day apply from the day after expiry. After 30 days of overstay, you may be barred from re-entering the UAE. Renew proactively.
What if I was abroad when my visa expired?
If your visa expired while you were outside the UAE, you cannot return on the expired visa. Your free zone must issue a new entry permit. Contact them immediately. Overstay fines may still apply if the grace period has passed.
Can my visa be cancelled if I'm outside the UAE too long?
Yes. UAE residency visas become void if the holder is outside the UAE for more than 6 consecutive months (except for Golden Visa holders). Your sponsor (the free zone) may cancel the visa. If you plan a long absence, inform your zone and consider visa re-entry.
How long is a free zone investor/partner visa valid?
Most free zone investor/partner visas are issued for 2 or 3 years, depending on the zone. DMCC and DIFC typically issue 3-year visas; budget zones (IFZA, SHAMS, Ajman) typically issue 2-year visas.
Do I need to leave the UAE to renew?
No — if you're in the UAE, a 'change of status' is processed within the country. You only need to exit if your zone requires it (rare) or if you entered on a tourist visa and need to do a visa run.
Can I renew my family/dependent visas at the same time?
Yes. Dependent (family) visas are sponsored by the residency visa holder. They follow the same renewal process and are typically renewed at the same time. Each dependent will need their own medical fitness certificate.
What is a Grace Period visa?
After a residency visa expires, GDRFA/ICA typically grants a 30-day grace period to either renew the visa or exit the UAE without fines. However, this is discretionary and not guaranteed — do not rely on it.
