How to Switch from One UAE Free Zone to Another in 2026

By Yaschin Mohabir··8 min read

Switching from one UAE free zone to another isn't like changing apartments — there's no "transfer" mechanism. You either close-and-reopen, or set up a branch in the new zone alongside the existing entity. Each path has different costs, timeline, and tax implications.

Option 1: Close + Reopen

  • Process: deregister current free zone entity, then incorporate new one in target zone.
  • Cost: AED 5,000–15,000 closure + AED 12,000–35,000 new setup = AED 20,000–50,000.
  • Time: 4–8 weeks total (closure: 2–4 weeks; new setup: 2–4 weeks).
  • Pros: clean slate, no legacy compliance.
  • Cons: new entity has no banking history; bank account opening starts from zero.

Option 2: Branch in new zone

  • Process: keep existing entity, register a branch (or subsidiary) in target zone.
  • Cost: AED 12,000–25,000 for branch registration, ongoing dual licence renewal.
  • Time: 2–3 weeks.
  • Pros: keeps banking, contracts, history.
  • Cons: ongoing cost of two licences (~AED 30,000–60,000/year combined).

When switching makes sense

  • Current zone is too expensive and you don't need the prestige.
  • You need an activity not permitted in current zone (e.g., financial advisory → ADGM).
  • Banking constantly rejects current zone (move to DMCC for banking ease).
  • You're relocating from Dubai to Abu Dhabi or RAK.

When NOT to switch

If your only complaint is cost and you're saving less than AED 10,000/year, the switching cost (AED 20K+) eats 2+ years of savings. Just renew at current zone and re-evaluate when revenue scales.

Don't forget

  • Cancel all visas before closing the entity.
  • Update bank with new entity details (or open new account).
  • Notify FTA of corporate tax registration changes.
  • Update UAE Pass and government services with new entity.
  • Re-register IP / trademarks under new entity.

Verdict

Most founders should branch instead of switch — cheaper, faster, preserves banking. Close-and-reopen only if the current entity has compliance issues or you genuinely need a fresh start.
